If anyone tells you that Cuphead is a laid-back game to unwind after work… be wary. Chances are, they just want to see you suffer. In this adventure, you control Cuphead or his inseparable brother Mugman—two mugs with legs who, thanks to a disastrous bet against the Devil, end up traversing a world full of enemies that look like they’ve stepped out of a 1930s cartoon. Everything is beautiful… until projectiles start raining down on you from every possible angle.

The mechanics seem simple: shoot, jump, and dodge. But don’t be fooled. In a matter of seconds, you’ll have to dodge fireballs, lightning bolts, ghosts, giant carrots with psychic powers, dragons, boxing flowers, and any other madness the developers could have imagined. Here, reflexes are more valuable than strength, because a single lapse in concentration can send you right back to the start of the battle before you even have time to say “just one more game.”

The bosses are the real stars of the game. Each one has several phases, and just when you think you’ve got it under control, it decides to transform into an even more absurd and dangerous version of itself. The only way to win is to memorize all their moves as if you were studying for an exam. You’ll die once, ten times, or fifty times… but when you finally defeat them, you’ll feel like you could conquer the world.

Throughout the adventure, you’ll also navigate platforming levels where you can collect coins to buy new weapons and abilities. There are rapid-fire shots, projectiles that chase enemies, huge bombs, and other special attacks that can make your life a little less impossible. Choosing the right equipment before each battle is almost as important as having good reflexes.

One of the most interesting moves is the famous parry, which involves hitting pink objects while you’re in the air. It seems easy until you realize that those objects are usually surrounded by twenty different hazards just waiting for you to miss your jump. Mastering this technique will let you charge up special attacks capable of turning the tide of battle at just the right moment.
